What if rock did not begin with Elvis Presley, but with Edith Piaf?
It is the core question in “Haut les filles”. The documentary tells the story of the genre from the perspective of women in the 60s right up until the present day. From Brigitte Fontaine and Françoise Hardy to Jehnny Beth and Christine and the Queens, by way of Catherine Ringer, Vanessa Paradis and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film lets French female rock singers have their say. An ode to anti-macho rock and ‘the weaker sex’ that is not as weak as all that.
